🐝 National Pollinator Week is an annual event c 🐝 National Pollinator Week is an annual event celebrated internationally in support of pollinator health. This year it takes place June 20-26. Luckily for the birds, bees, bats, and butterflies whizzing around Westchester, their welfare is thought of throughout the year by the growing number of communities participating in local branches of Healthy Yards and Pollinator Pathway.

🦋 In this spirit, New Rochelle and Pelham Healthy Yards and the Larchmont-Mamaroneck Pollinator Pathway are teaming up for a Sound Shore Pollinator Garden Tour. Our neighbors with gardens dedicated to providing native habitat for pollinators, cleaning the water and air, and building rich soils will share their gardens with the public.

Open Garden Day
🗓 Sunday, June 26, 2022
📍 Pelham and New Rochelle:
 10 am -1 pm
📍 Larchmont and Mamaroneck:
 1 pm - 5 pm

🏡 This is not a tour to showcase perfect gardens, but one that shares healthy landscaping practices in an effort to raise awareness about protecting our pollinators and improving our environment. This is a FREE event and open to ALL.

For descriptions and addresses of the participating homes, visit pollinator-pathway.org/tours (link in bio) and use the drop-down menu for each town.

🙌 Thank you to our Pelham Healthy Yards hosts, 🙌 Thank you to our Pelham Healthy Yards hosts, Tedd and Katie Stratis, for showing us the true pleasure of being outdoors and gardening with ease by using the “No-dig” method for growing plants. Whether planting tasty vegetables or shrubs and perennials that support pollinators, you can remove lawn without tilling and just add plants. Your tummy and the soil will thank you! 🏡🦋🧑‍🌾

Nourish your garden beds AND indoor potted plants Nourish your garden beds AND indoor potted plants with nutrient-rich compost! 💚

🏡 Add compost to your garden in the spring, summer, or fall to improve the soil health of your garden. In the spring, add 2-4 inches of compost and work it into the soil. In the summer, add a ½ to 1 inch top-dressing of compost to established garden plants. After garden cleanup in the fall, you can add a few inches to the top of the bed to protect the soil, then till in the compost in the spring.

🪴 Revitalize your indoor and outdoor potted plants with compost as well! Gently scrape away the top inch or two of potting soil until you can just see the top of the root ball. Add fresh compost filling it up to the same depth as before, unless the soil was already quite low. In that case add compost until the roots are covered, taking care not to bury the stem of the plant or any leaves.

♻️ In celebration of Compost Awareness Week, Village of Pelham and Pelham Manor residents are invited to visit Pelham Manor’s Recycling Center (Spring Road off Boston Post Road) during normal hours this week (5/1/22-5/7/22: Monday, Thursday, and Saturday from 8 am - 12 noon) to pick up FREE compost for personal use.

Thinking of giving backyard composting a try? Ther Thinking of giving backyard composting a try? There are four main “ingredients” you’ll need. “Making compost takes some care; add greens, browns, water, and air.”

🍃🍏 Greens are your nitrogen source and include food scraps (such as fruit and vegetable peels, coffee grounds, tea bags, and old bread), fresh grass clippings, fresh weeds, and manure.

🍂 Browns are your carbon source and include fallen leaves, shredded paper, wood chips, and straw. Browns also provide structure for the pile, allowing air to flow more freely.

💨 Air - Compost microorganisms need oxygen! While not necessary, turning (or mixing) the pile twice a month will add more air and speed up breakdown.

💦 Water - Composting works best with the right amount of moisture. If the pile is too wet, add some leaves, shredded newspaper, or sawdust. If it's too dry, add some water.
