Native Plant Restoration and Service Learning at Bronx River Reservation
April 22, 2018 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
This native plant restoration and service learning event will be held with Girl and Boy Scout troops and any other interested volunteers in coordination with Westchester Parks Foundation on “Pitch in for Parks Day.” Special thanks also go to NYC’s Greenbelt Native Plant Center for Providing Plants.
We’ll talk a little about the history of the park, biodiversity, and problems with invasive plants. We’ll try to identify some plants in the area. And then we’ll get to work removing some knotweed and replacing it with native wildflowers and sedges.
Please wear non-patterned, light-colored long sleeves and long pants tucked into socks.
Please bring:
– Trowels or shovels, shears/ cutting tools
– Work gloves. We will have some gloves but not kid’s size. Regular gloves for them would be fine
– An old bottle with water for the plants
This can count as high school service hours. Boy Scouts can collect some of the 12 leaves they would use towards a nature badge.
